Arya’s eyes fill over with white as she is rendered blind as punishment. Confused, Arya repeatedly removes multiple faces from “Jaqen’s” body, until she sees her own face. Near the end of Season 5, Arya is well underway in her training as a Faceless Man in the House of Black and White. While as “Jaqen H’ghar” he claimed to be from Lorath, this was just part of his fake identity, and and there is no indication that he has ever even set foot in Lorath. “Jaqen H’ghar” is just a persona adopted by one of the Faceless Men of Braavos, but the Faceless Men have no personal names. Since Jaqen seems skilled at keeping secret identities, it has been suggested that he is none other than Syrio Forel, Arya’s sword teacher and ‘water dancer. In A Clash of Kings, Arya meets up with Jaqen H’ghar, a mysterious assassin with the added skill of changing his physical appearance. ![]() When Arya decided to leave Braavos and the House of Black and White, she told Jaqen H’ghar, “A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell, and I am going home.” Instead of being outraged that she was abandoning him and the God of Death, Jaqen H’ghar smiled as she left. Jaqen gives her a coin and tells her that if she ever needs to see him again, she must show the coin to a Braavosi and say the words “Valar Morghulis.” He tells her to repeat the words and then announces that Jaqen H’ghar is dead. To his horror, Arya says his own name, asking him to kill himself. In the books as well as on the show, Jaqen H’ghar changes his look by simply waving his hand in front of his face. According to the books, though the masks hanging in the Hall of Faces are part of how the Faceless Men disguise themselves, there is much more alchemy and blood magic involved. How did Arya become a faceless man?īy the end when Arya kills and scalps Waif, Jaqen tests her again by saying “So a girl truly has become no one?” Arya passes the test by saying “A girl is Arya Stark from Winterfell.” It was at that moment Jaqen smiled quite knowingly and thus Arya had earned her name from the Many-Faced God and became a Faceless Man. One theory to emerge after Game of Thrones came to an end following season eight is that Syrio was, in fact, Faceless Man Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha). Syrio may have only appeared in three episodes of season one but his exit has long been debated among viewers, especially as his death is never shown on-screen.
